Argument for Comprehensive Sex Education in Texas
Written for Education Studies capstone course at Michigan State University
Written in December 2013
Above is an abstract of my capstone research paper for my education studies minor. I really enjoyed focusing on education policy in my courses in education at Michigan State University, and this course allowed us students to take a current issue in education policy and write a lobbyist paper on it. An issue that we didn't discuss that much, but I greatly enjoyed was sex education in public schools. I went to a Catholic high school that practiced abstinence-only education, and I have watched numerous classmates struggle with STIs, accidental pregnancies and single motherhood (my high school was all-girls).
I decided to take on one of the most conservative states in the nation to lobby -- Texas -- as the federal government leaves public school sex education to the states. I spent hours researching this topic (of which there was little research to be found). Texas implements abstinence-focused education and schools are not allowed to teach about contraceptive usage, thus making the rates of STIs and teen pregancies and abortions much higher. I invite you to read the entire abstract by clicking the link in the title to learn more about this important issue in education.
